Grants from Trust  Funds and Foundations 2017/2018

As time passes, fundraising is proving to be more and more challenging. As ever, we continue to pursue opportunities to generate charitable income through grants’ fundraising and the writing of fundraising bids – the aim being to secure funding to continue the work that we do here at the nursery, particularly looking after those children that are disadvantaged.

We regularly review our list of prospective trust funders and look to identify opportunities for grants, alongside a ‘wish list’ of projects, each of which are prioritised according to need and the impact on the charity’s beneficiaries.

Although we have found that grant funding has taken a particular hit in the current funding climate, with most grantees reporting that the availability of grant funding has reduced, we have nevertheless enjoyed some significant successes, including:

Unrestricted Grants

Core Costs
A total of £13,750 (Garfield Weston £10K, Friarsgate £3K and Woodroffe £750) was received towards running costs.

Restricted Grants
Outdoor Play Areas

This project has been broken down into two distinct phases. Phase 1 (Bluebell) and Phase 2 (Poppy and Daisy). We were successful with a grant of £10,412 from Southover Manor Trust which will give momentum for the installation of a new surface area in Phase 1 to be completed by Summer 2018.

Beach Schooling
The Sussex Community Fund granted £3,535.37 for our 'Beach School’ project including training for two members of staff, children’s wet weather gear plus a branded Turtle Kiddy Bus for ferrying children around the local area.

Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO)
The Henry Smith Charity granted a 2nd instalment of a two year grant (£20K total) towards the cost of our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO).

Wifi/IT Technology
The National Lottery Awards for All approved our application for a grant of £9,895 towards modernising the nursery’s computing which will enable the nursery to become more efficient.  Improved technology will undoubtedly improve the experience of any disabled users by providing a sensory, individualised experience which promotes learning, communication and introduces literacy, numeracy and speech in an accessible format. The grant will also be used to purchase desktop and tablet computers to replace the aged and unreliable machines the Charity currently uses.

Outside Play Areas – Raising £100K – No. 1 Priority

Outside play areas should be stimulating, creative and exciting places to play, they should not only capture a child’s imagination but should also provide a safe area which encourages healthy mental and physical development. Wet pour and tarmac covers a large part of the outdoor areas with a small amount of grass. Surfaces are now tired, worn and show severe signs of wear and tear with areas that are potentially a health and safety risk. With this in mind, daily risk assessments are carried out to ensure that learning outside can be accessed safely.

The main focus of our project will be to make the outside area safe and secure and identify the resources required to encourage the children outside to give them new opportunities and experiences crucial to their development and wellbeing.

Raising funds for this project continues to be our number one priority and we will be making a concerted effort in writing to trust funds for grants to help with the cost as well as holding our own local fundraising events.

My son 14 months old started there in January! They are absolutely amazing... brilliant with the kids and brilliant with parents! I was super anxious about leaving him and they really helped calm me and make me feel at ease! I really feel they genuinely care about the children.

My daughter is 2.5 and has been going since she was 8months. They are brilliant! She has such a good time. The staff are amazing and so lovely. They are really helpful when you’re settling in and so understanding. They’ve put up with my sobbing on many occasions! My second little one is due to start in June. Her development has been awesome and I put a lot of that down to them.

My kids are 2 and 4 and attend there. My 2yr old is thriving. She didn't say much when she started, can’t shut her up now. Talking, signing, wanting to play more, they're so good with her. My son loves it too, he gets to play outside and go in the soft play almost every day. He made friends there so quickly too.
